NSW General Powerboat Licence

A one day /course with a mixture of theory and practical that will give you the knowledge and skills to get your NSW general boat licence.

The course is for beginners and those that have experience but would like some additional instruction and to get their NSW boat licence. The course covers, safety, regulations, general boat handling, docking, as well as low and high speed boat handling.

After completing this course, you will be able to take the certificate to a NSW Service Centre to apply for your licence.

What the course covers

Practical Skills

  • High speed handling (trim, stability, driving position, crew safety, waves, quick stop

  • Safety and preparation (kill cord, life jackets, communications, crew position and safety)

  • Seamanship skills (anchoring, berthing, handling lines, mooring buoys)

  • Low speed handling (close quarters, standing off, wind and tide.

  • Emergency situations (types of emergency, man overboard recovery, marine radio distress calls)

Powerboat theory

  • Personal equipment (clothing, lifejackets etc)

  • Parts of the boat (basic terminology)

  • On board safety

  • Types of craft (hull types, engines, fuel)

  • Basic weather theory (forecasts, sea state, effect of wind and tide)

  • Legal responsibilities and obligations.

  • Rules of the road (application of basic IRPCS whilst underway)

What you need to know

You may get splashed so dress accordingly (splash jacket is recommended). There are changing rooms you are welcome to use on site, so feel free to bring a towel and a spare change of clothes. You are welcome to bring a water bottle and snacks. We recommend sunscreen, hat and sunglasses for those warm Manly days.

LIFE JACKETS ARE SUPPLIED AND MUST BE WORN

The powerboat course is an 8 hour course. Timing of the course varies according to the session.

Powerboat courses are run either from Manly at Manly Sailing or Pittwater. Location will be detailed for the specific session.

Participants should be 16 years and above.

Parking in Manly can be difficult there are a few council car parks nearby and most streets around have 2 hours of free parking. Best option is getting the ferry or public transport in and walking over to Manly Sailing. If you head in via Ferry visit our new ticket booth in the wharf to lock in your rental.

Not a problem. This course is for beginners and those that need the NSW powerboat licence.

You can take your belongings out on the powerboat at your own risk. You are welcome to leave all other belongings in our secure office.
