Hi! I’m Sam.
My interest in boats started when my brother got his powerboat licence at Manly Sailing. He bought a little tinny, and I begged him to let me drive it. He always said no because I didn’t have my licence at the time.
It took me a while to get mine — mostly because I’d just gotten a new computer and was glued to it! Six months later my brother bought a new boat, and by then I was starting to get bored of sitting indoors. He took me out around Middle Harbour, and that trip changed everything: I was determined to get my Powerboat Licence. A few weeks later, I was with my brother when he got a message from Nicola:
“Hey Josh, Sam is keen on doing his powerboat licence tomorrow morning. There’s a spot available.”
I was very nervous, but my parents convinced me to say yes. That night I studied like crazy: re-reading every part of the handbook, making sure I knew absolutely everything.
The next morning, I woke up buzzing with nerves. When I arrived at Manly Sailing my heart was racing; it felt like it was going to jump right out of my chest. We started with the theory, learning all the parts of the boat. Later we went out for the practical session (which was amazing), and finally it was time for the test — the most crucial part.… and I passed! I was so happy.
Fast-forward a few weeks: I asked Nicola if I could volunteer at Manly Sailing and learn how to sail. I helped with classes and at Manly Sailing and slowing built up my experience. About a year later, I was asked to join the team as an Assistant Instructor. I was absolutely stoked.
Around four months later, my brother had his birthday party on Southwinds — a 61ft ketch owned by Finn, who owns Manly Sailing. The day was going great: everyone sailing, relaxing, eating, and having fun… until the very end when my brother accidentally stood on the throttle and broke it. That meant we had to sail ourselves back onto the mooring. Finn told me and Josh what to do, and eventually we guided the boat in safely. Everyone was relieved — and honestly, pretty proud — when we finally made it back onto the mooring safe and sound.
And now here I am, after another few months, writing this during my work experience at Manly Sailing. I’m driving boats, doing maintenance on Southwinds, teaching kids how to sail, and most importantly — having fun.
And that’s how I ended up where I am today, it will be interesting to see what comes next.
Thanks,
Sam
