Sam’s Story

Hi! I’m Sam. My interest in boats started when my brother got his powerboat licence at Manly Sailing. He bought a little tinny, and I begged him to let me drive it. He always said no because I didn’t have my licence at the time. It took me a while to get mine — mostly because I’d just gotten a new computer and was glued to it! Six months later my brother bought a new boat, and by then I was starting to get bored of sitting indoors. He took me out around Middle Harbour, and that trip changed everything: [...]

Restoring Belle: a 1968 Wayfarer dinghy

2025-11-13T10:12:54+11:00

Early in 2024 I (Finn) came across a weathered but well-built 1968 Wayfarer dinghy, sail number 1773. I had been looking for a boat small enough to introduce my daughters Poppy (5) and Bonnie (3) to sailing, and sturdy enough for family adventures on the harbour throughout their childhood. Wayfarers are excellent cruising dinghies but very few have been built in Australia, so I was thrilled to come across one so close to home in the Northern Beaches. This one had excellent bones and was clearly the work of a talented shipwright, but she was tired and crying out for [...]

2024-12-31T09:05:47+11:00

What is the Saltwater Veterans Sailing Project? The Saltwater Veterans Sailing Project uses sailing as a therapeutic and social outlet, bringing veterans together to share their stories and build new bonds through the shared experience of working as a crew on sailing vessels. For many veterans, transitioning to civilian life can feel like navigating rough waters. The challenges of reintegration, managing mental health, and rebuilding social connections can be overwhelming. That’s where the Saltwater Veterans Sailing Project steps in—offering a safe and supportive environment that combines the calming qualities of the sea with the camaraderie of shared experiences. Allambie Heights Scouts Join Manly Sailing for An Afternoon: A Perfect Partnership For Kids! Every year, the Allambie Heights Scouts group teams up with Manly Sailing to offer a fantastic sailing program for kids. It’s a chance for young adventurers to learn the ropes while gaining valuable life skills. Kids who try sailing develop confidence as they master the skills needed to control a boat and navigate the water. They learn independence by taking responsibility for their vessel, and they build problem-solving abilities as they adjust to ever-changing wind conditions and tides. Sailing also gives kids a hands-on way to engage with [...]

Resources to encourage outdoor play for children

2022-07-02T20:26:35+10:00

Resources to encourage your children to put down their devices and play outside Guest blog contributed by StopNDD.org! A TV or tablet might provide your child’s favourite form of entertainment, but as a parent, you probably wish they would take a bigger interest in playing outside. There’s nothing wrong with playing a few educational games or occasionally watching programs on TV, but there's a world of nature out there with so much potential for fun, learning, stimulation, and imagination! In fact, the dependence on screen-time has become such an issue that the term 'nature-deficit disorder' was coined to describe what [...]
